8 Days Horseback Riding in Montenegro Mountains
Day 1: Arrival – Kolašin
After arrival at the airport, local hosts will make sure that you enjoy every part of your tour around Montenegro. We will transfer from Podgorica (the capital of Montenegro) to the northern part of the country, to the town of Kolašin, located at an altitude of 960 m. The ride through the Platije Canyon will certainly be one of the most interesting parts of the journey. On the way, we will visit the Morača Monastery (built in 1252), one of the most monumental medieval monuments in Montenegro.
Upon arrival, we will meet the horses and have an orientation briefing during dinner while tasting traditional Montenegrin cuisine.
Overnight at Bijeli Potok Cabins.
Day 2: Monastery Tour
After breakfast, we will prepare the horses and start riding along streams and through forest trails to Izlazak, a viewpoint overlooking Kolašin. The ride continues near the Ćirilovac Monastery, up to Kljuc Peak and Kapela, and then across the Bjelasica meadows to Eco Katun Vranjak (summer pasture Vranjak).
Overnight at Eco Katun Vranjak.
Eco Katun Vranjak (Summer Pasture) is located on the border of Biogradska Gora National Park at an altitude of 1,720 m. During dinner, you will have a chance to taste traditional and almost forgotten local dishes. The night brings special mountain magic, with peaceful silence occasionally interrupted by owl hooting or wolf howling.
An early wake-up offers the first morning sunrays falling over the mountain ranges, filling your lungs with fresh mountain air. You may let nature take its course while enjoying views of Prokletije, Maganik, and Sinjajevina.
Day 3: Biogradska Gora National Park
Today’s ride takes place in Biogradska Gora National Park. From Vranjak, we ride near Zekova Glava Peak and Pešića Lake, then visit Ursulovačko, Ševarine, and Šiško Lakes. The ride continues to Svatovsko Groblje, the spring of the Biogradska River, Ogorela Glava, and ends at Katun Goleš, where we will stay overnight.
Biogradska Gora was proclaimed a national park in 1952. Its most impressive feature is the virgin forest reserve covering 16 sq km, protected by a strict conservation regime. It is one of the last remaining virgin forests in Europe.
Overnight at Katun Goleš.
Day 4: Sinjavina Mountain
From Katun Goleš, we ride through the village of Moračko Trebaljevo, then cross the Tara River (when water levels allow, we may ride directly through the river) toward Markovo Brdo and onward to Sinjavina Mountain. The viewpoints of Sinjavina reveal diverse landscapes, including the Lipovo Valley. We finish today’s ride at Potrk Katun.
After settling in at a local household, we will enjoy a welcome drink and dinner.
Day 5: Savina Voda Lake
Today we enjoy spectacular scenery while riding through untouched wilderness. After the morning ride to Savina Voda Lake, we continue uphill across the Sinjavina plateau, passing near Ružica Church. The ride continues toward Zabojsko Lake, where we spend time relaxing and enjoying the pristine surroundings. A short ride brings us to a katun near the lake, where we overnight with local families.
Hidden among Sinjavina cliffs and surrounded by dense coniferous forests, this emerald-green lake reaches a depth of 19 meters, making it one of the three deepest lakes in Montenegro. Its exceptional beauty is preserved under strict protection as part of Durmitor National Park.
Day 6: Village Tour
After breakfast, the ride continues across Sinjavina meadows and through the local villages of Šaranci, where we enjoy lunch with local families and traditional food. We then proceed toward Durmitor Mountain, visiting Zminjičko Lake, Njegovuđa, and finally Žabljak.
This breathtaking national park was shaped by glaciers and is crossed by rivers and underground streams. Along the Tara River Canyon—the deepest gorge in Europe—dense pine forests alternate with crystal-clear lakes and support a wide variety of endemic flora.
Durmitor National Park was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980.
Overnight at a 3★ hotel in Žabljak.
We expect to have enough time to visit Black Lake this afternoon.
Day 7: Riblje Lake and Rafting
After a morning ride across Durmitor meadows to Riblje Lake (approximately a 3-hour ride), we will have lunch at the Ostojić family farm. After lunch, a short transfer (about 30 minutes) takes us to the rafting starting point in the Tara Canyon.
Rafting on the Splavište–Žugića Luka section (within Durmitor National Park) is not extreme. During this 2.5-hour tour, you will enjoy the stunning Tara River Canyon, which is 1,300 m deep—the deepest in Europe and the second deepest in the world after the Colorado Canyon.
Highlights include the Ljutica River (the strongest spring in Europe), Đurđevića Tara Bridge, emerald whirlpools, and Žugića Luka, where the tour ends. After rafting, adrenaline lovers may optionally try the zip line across the canyon near Đurđevića Tara Bridge.
Transfer back to Kolašin for an overnight stay at Bijeli Potok Cabins.
