National Park Biogradska Gora

While Montenegro is often celebrated for its dramatic coastline, its true soul lies in the lush, primeval depths of National Park Biogradska Gora. Established in 1952, it is one of the oldest protected areas in the world—protected since 1878 when it was gifted to King Nikola—and remains one of the last three remaining virgin forests in Europe.

The most impressive part of the Park is the virgin forest named Biogradska Gora, which is located in its central part, and that covers an area of 1.600 ha. This part of the Park is characterized by a great number of trees, and it is a highly protected Nature Reserve.

Biogradsko Lake is the biggest lake in the park, and it is 1.094 m above sea level.

The Crown Jewel: Biogradsko Lake

At the heart of the park lies Biogradsko Lake, a shimmering glacial "mountain eye" situated at 1,094 meters above sea level. Surrounded by ancient trees, the lake acts as a mirror for the emerald canopy.

The Educational Trail: A flat, 3.5-kilometer wooden walkway circles the lake, offering an easy one-hour stroll through the 400-year-old forest.

On the Water: You can rent traditional wooden rowboats or kayaks to experience the silence of the park from the center of the lake.

A Biodiversity Hotspot

The park is a "living museum" of nature. Despite its small size, it hosts over 2,000 plant species and 86 types of trees, some reaching heights of 60 meters. Birdwatchers can spot over 150 species, including the golden eagle, while the deep woods provide sanctuary for brown bears, wolves, and deer.

High-Altitude Adventure

For those looking to go beyond the lake, the Bjelasica Mountain range offers:

The Peaks: Hike to Crna Glava (2,139m) for panoramic views that stretch across the rolling green ridges of northern Montenegro.

The Katuns: Experience authentic mountain life by visiting a katun—traditional shepherds’ summer settlements—where you can sample homemade "Kolašin" cheese and hearty mountain stews.

Visit to National Park includes enjoying the virgin forest, one of the last three virgin forests with trees up to four centuries old, over 45 meters high and 150 centimeters wide, also, walking around the lake for about 1h / 1h 30min (3 km long path) + walk up the hill to the viewpoint.

Whether you are "forest bathing" among ancient beeches or exploring glacial troughs, Biogradska Gora offers a rare glimpse into a Europe that once was: untouched, silent, and spectacularly green.

The price includes a transfer from Kolasin and back, an English-speaking guide, and entrance to the NP.
