Mrtvica Canyon

Mrtvica Canyon is situated in the central part of Montenegro, carved between the Maganik and Morača mountains, where the Mrtvica River springs beneath Kapa Moračka. The Mrtvica River is about 10 km long, but a large part of it is hidden inside the canyon, where the heights reach from 1,100 to 1,250 meters.
The tour starts from the village of Međuriječje, which is located on the Podgorica–Kolašin road, about 35 km from Kolašin.

During the first kilometer of hiking upstream, we cross the Danilo Bridge, which was built in 1858 by Montenegrin Prince Danilo Petrović in memory of his mother, Krstinja. Climbing along a path through low vegetation and a macadam road, we reach a trail carved into the wooded slopes.

Afterwards, we arrive at the Gate of Wishes, formed naturally by rocks. These rocks create a natural bridge, behind which you can see beautiful views of the calmest part of the Mrtvica River. Although it is surrounded by wild rapids, suddenly a turquoise lake appears. There is also a board with instructions on how to throw stones into the lake, as only pure wishes, according to legend, can be fulfilled by the Maganik fairy.

We continue through the forest, where we are welcomed by Bijeli Nerini, a spring that cascades into the Mrtvica River. After that, we reach Mrtvačke Grede—a narrow passage carved into the rock, about 200 meters long. It was cut in 1973 by General Danilo Jauković, together with the army and local people, to connect the villages of Velje Duboko and Mrtvo Duboko.

After exiting Mrtvačke Grede, we reach a beach where we take a short break and enjoy a picnic. Afterwards, we return the same way.

Transport from Kolašin is organized by minibus or jeep, depending on the number of participants.
