SNOWSHOEING AT BJELASICA
During the winter months, when snow covers the entire land, the snowshoeing arrangement is the ideal choice because you don't need special skills.
While the skiers carve up the groomed runs of Kolašin 1450 and 1600, a quieter, more ethereal adventure awaits on the open ridges of Bjelasica. Snowshoeing in this mountain range is often described as "cloud walking." Unlike the jagged, limestone walls of Durmitor, Bjelasica is characterized by gentle, rolling volcanic peaks that, when covered in a thick blanket of snow, create a vast, undulating desert of white.
1. The Route: From Ski Lift to Silent Peaks
One of the most popular snowshoeing experiences begins with a literal lift. You can take the six-seater Viline Vode ski lift from the base station, instantly bypassing the steep forest climb and arriving at the high-altitude ridges.
The Ključ Peak Hike: From the top of the lift, a 5-6km trail leads toward Ključ Peak. On a clear day, the 360-degree views are staggering, stretching from the Komovi massifs to the distant peaks of Prokletije (the Accursed Mountains).
Vranjak Katun: Many winter tours trek to the nomadic summer village of Vranjak. In winter, these traditional wooden huts are half-buried in snow, looking like a scene from a fairy tale. It’s the perfect spot to stop for a thermos of hot tea and a picnic lunch.
2. Why Bjelasica?
Bjelasica is arguably the best range in Montenegro for snowshoeing because of its safety and terrain. Its rounded summits mean the avalanche risk is generally lower than in steeper ranges (though a guide is still essential), and the "open" nature of the mountain means you are constantly bathed in winter sunlight rather than trapped in dark canyons.
3. 2026 Practical Tips
Night Tours: For a unique twist, several operators in Kolašin now offer torch-lit night snowshoeing. Walking through the silent, frozen forest by the glow of a headlamp is a surreal experience.
Gear & Guides: Don't attempt to navigate the plateaus alone; winter fog can roll in and erase the horizon in minutes. Local agencies like Gold Travel or Balkan Adventure provide full kits (snowshoes, gaiters, poles) and expert guides, payable per person.
The "Kacamak" Reward: After a day of burning calories in the cold, head back to Kolašin for a bowl of Kacamak—a heavy, traditional mountain dish of mashed potatoes, flour, and local cheese that is the ultimate winter "fuel."
