RAFTING TOUR ON THE TARA RIVER
The Tara River is not just a body of water; it is a force of nature that has carved the deepest canyon in Europe (and the second deepest in the world after the Grand Canyon). Known as the "Tear of Europe" for its incredible clarity, rafting here is a rite of passage for anyone visiting the Balkans. Whether you are looking for a gentle float or a heart-pounding Class IV challenge, the Tara has a "personality" for every season.
1. The Two Main Sections
The river is navigable for nearly 100km, usually split into two distinct experiences:
The Upper Canyon (Zabljak/Durmitor): This is the scenic, "wilderness" section. Starting near the iconic Djurdjevica Tara Bridge, tours here are often multi-day adventures that take you through the deepest part of the canyon. It is quieter, grander, and perfect for nature photography.
The Lower Canyon (Brštanovica to Šćepan Polje): This is the "Adrenaline Section." Almost 90% of day-trippers choose this 18km stretch because it contains the highest density of rapids (over 21 in a single run). This is where the world championships are held.
2. Seasonal Intensity
The river level is dictated by the snowmelt from the Durmitor mountains:
April – May: The "Extreme" season. The river is high, cold, and fast. Rapids reach Class IV-V. This is for experienced rafters or those looking for a serious rush.
June – August: The "Golden" season. The water stabilizes to Class II-III. It is perfect for families and first-timers. The water is warmer (around 12°C), and there are plenty of stops for "cliff jumping" into turquoise pools.
September: The "Picturesque" season. The river is calmest, and the canyon walls turn gold and red.
SPLAVIŠTE - ŽUGIĆA LUKA (NP DURMITOR AREA)
Arrangement starts from the place Splaviste 3 km upstream, from the bridge on the Djurdjevica Tara. Length of rafting- 14 km. For this arrangement, we provide the best world equipment, with experienced guides who will make this rafting remain in permanent memory.
During this arrangement, you will enjoy the National Park "Durmitor" and the beautiful Tara Canyon. We will see the Ljutica River, the strongest hot spring in Europe, and afterward follow the bridge on Djurdjevica Tara, green whirlpools, and then Zugica Luka, where rafting finishes.
Afterward, we provide lunch in the camp on Djurdjevica Tara, with national cuisine.
This is a half-day tour (the length of duration depends on the water level) and it is performed in the period Jun-October. Departure from Kolasin in the morning hours (8:30- 9:00 h). Depending on the number of persons, transport is organized by jeep vehicles/minibus.
