National Park Lovcen

National park Lovcen is distinguished by natural and cultural and historic characteristics. It is at the conjunction of two climate zones, Mediterranean and continental, which resulted in development of wildlife with many endemic species.

Among 1.300 plants, which is 1/3 of Montenegrin flora, there are many endemic, relic, medicinal, aromatic, honey plants. The park provides habitat to many animal species, and many of them are endemic, relic, healing and honey plants. In addition to mammals (wolf, bear, boar, fox, roe dear, rabbit, white-breasted hedgehog, Montenegrin vole etc), other animal groups can be found, around 200 types of birds, 11 types of reptiles, 5 types of amphibians, 85 types of daily butterflies, 100 types of ants, 45 types of flower flies, 10 types of bark beetles etc.

Cultural legacy is characterised by memorial monuments, churches, national construction and old roads. At Jezerski vrh (Lake Peak), 1657m, is the mausoleum of the Montenegrin ruler and poet Petar II Petrovic Njegos. Lovcen serpentines are a part of old caravan road from Kotor to Njegusi. There are many churches with simple architecture, as well as traditional buildings (stone houses with huts, threshing floors, traditional dry stack stone walls, well and cisterns).

Here are five zones in the park all with special usage and management regime:

  • Reserve of whitebark pine forest (foot of Stirovnik and Jezerski vrh)
  • Reserve of beech, conifer and rare hardwood forests (the area between Jezerski vrh, Stirovnik, Trestenicki vrh, Babnjak and Golis)
  • Reserve of beech forest (Konjsko)
  • Reserve of dwarf pine forest (the areas between Rupa and Blatiste at around 1.100m)
  • Herpetological reserve (lake below Jezerski vrh)
